City Power Johannesburg (Pty) Ltd is a state-owned electricity utility wholly owned by the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. Established in 2001 as a municipal entity, its core mandate is to purchase electricity from bulk generators—primarily Eskom—and distribute it to residents, businesses, and institutions across Johannesburg.
City Power’s vision is to become a world-class electricity distributor, aligned with Johannesburg’s broader ambition of being a world-class African city.
City Power’s vision for the Smart Meter Implementation Programme (SMIP) is that intelligent energy meters in homes and businesses will collect information on usage and send all the data to a central hub located at City Power, allowing the company to actively manage the distribution of electricity supply within the metropole.
nVisionIT, in partnership with the Edison Power Group, were engaged to integrate smart metering infrastructure as part of an IOT (Internet of things) deployment in a private cloud deployment.

City Power Johannesburg’s use of technology was recognised by Microsoft in its 2015 annual global awards, naming nVisionIT its worldwide Application Integration Partner of the Year.
